The UMass Lowell River Hawks dropped their third straight game of the season as the Western Michigan Broncos stormed into the Tsongas Center and posted a 6-0 shutout victory. The defending national champions Broncos received contributions from up and down the lineup on Saturday night. Liam Valente opened the scoring in the first period giving Western Michigan a 1-0 lead. The tally was his second of the season.
In the second period, the Broncos offense took over. Ty Henricks collected his first goal of the season just under three minutes into the frame. Henricks was not done finding the back of the net as he cashed in again just a couple of minutes later giving Western Michigan a 3-0 advantage. With just 37 seconds on the clock, William Whitelaw made it 4-0 by blasting one top shelf past UMass goalie Austin Elliott. The Broncos carried a comfortable lead into the third period.
In the final frame, Western Michigan remained on the gas pedal. Defenseman Samuel Sjolund scored his first goal of the season putting the visitors up by five. William Whitelaw was able to bury his second goal of the night making it 6-0. The final shots on goal were 43-19 Broncos in a game that proved to be a route. The River Hawks will throw this one in the rearview mirror as they will look to bounce back when they travel to take on Mercyhurst University.
