The River Hawks opened up the month of November with a 5-1 win against Providence College at the Tsongas Center on Saturday evening. In a game that was scrappy from the opening puck drop, the River Hawks were able to get goals from five different skaters tonight. Just 10 seconds into the game, the River Hawks thought they had scored, but after further review, the puck did not cross the goal line and they remained scoreless. On the play, Mirko Buttazoni was assessed a game misconduct. After a scoreless first period, the flood gates opened up in the second.
UMass Lowell captain Jay Ahearn ripped home a one-timer on a 2-on-1 to help get the home team on the board. The goal was Ahearn’s fourth of the season, and it came shorthanded. Later in the period, senior TJ Schweighardt sniped home a shorthanded goal after blocking a shot in the defensive zone, giving the River Hawks a two goal advantage. Providence responded directly after falling behind 2-0 with a goal from Jonathan Fauchon. The marker was a power-play goal and the Friars cut the deficit to one.
In the third period, the River Hawks really took control of the game. Lee Parks cashed in on the power-play after Providence received a five minute penalty, restoring Lowell’s two goal lead. Anaheim Ducks 2025 first round draft pick Roger McQueen of Providence was given five and a game for grabbing the facemask of an opponent. Freshman Nate Misskey buried home his first career goal on the ensuing power-play with a one-timer from the faceoff circle, making it 4-1. Jak Vaarwerk added an empty-net goal, solidifying a UMass Lowell victory. Austin Elliott made 23 saves in the goal crease for the River Hawks.
The River Hawks will welcome UNH to Tsongas Center on Friday, November 7.
